
The first ever National Indian Film Festival of Australia (NIFFA) successfully travelled across 7 cities between February 13 till March 2, 2025. The festival concluded with a Grand Red-Caped Gala and the screening of "Roam Rome Mein" in Perth after has has stopped at a number of major cities throughout Australia.
NIFFA was well-attended with its aim of Indian diaspora extending to Australians with Indian roots. It also aimed to polish a collaboration between Australia and India on the film industry. The winners were announced by the council of nominees which was entirely female cast. Best Film award was given to Reema Kagti for her work “Superboys of Malegaon”. She was elated with the gratitude she received and how wide the films reach has gone.
Other notable winners were Anuj Gulati’s “WingMan (The Universal Irony of Love)” for Best Indie Feature Film, Goutam Ghose’s “Parikrama” for Best International Indian Film and Badrappa Gajula’s “Maa Oori Ramayanam” for Best Documentary Feature. Mahadevan praised the festival’s curated selection and the film’s one of a kind topic. This was shown in his winner for Best Documentary (Short) titled "The Man Who Hurls News".
The partnerships with Murdoch University and Dendy Cinemas aided the achievement of the festival. Anupam Sharma, founder of NIFFA, expressed his goal of commencing the promotion of Indian cinema into Regional Australia.
Other accolades comprise "The Last Show” which took the prize for Best Short Film as well as “The Garmentologist” which received Best Short Film - Special Mention. Raja Chatterjee’s “Misty” was awarded the Post-production Completion Grant. The impact of the festival seems to be prolonged with the set out campaign for encor e screenings following onward celebration at Dendy Cinemas, further screenings scheduled in conjuction with NIFFA Regional’s Western launch and later regional celebrations.
