On Tuesday, over 20 civil servants resigned from billionaire Trump advisor Elon Musk’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ alleging that they were ‘refusing to apply’ their skills towards ‘disrupting fundamental public services.’

“In the joint resignation letter reporting to the Associated Press, one of the staffers said, ‘we have served the American citizens and signed an oath to the constitution during the presidential transitions,’ suggesting that ‘they could in fact be called to serve at any point of time.’ The staffers further suggested that an alarming amount of those recruited by Musk to assist in shredding the federal government under the Trump presidency were political hacks without adequate experience or education for the job given to them.”

The wholesale resignation of engineers, product designers, and data professionals is solely a nuisance for the Republican president and Musk's soviet style federal workforce reform. With their campaign to terminate or force tens of thousands of government employees to become jobless facing legal hurdles, this move comes as no surprise.

Karoline Leavitt, the press secretary at the White House was unfazed by the resignation and simply stated what the journalists suspected.

“Any person who believes that protests, lawsuits, and lawfare will intimidate President Trump must have been living under a rock for the past several years," said Leavitt. “The President has made it clear that nothing is going to stop him from improving the effectiveness of the federal government which is supposed to serve the hardworking American people.” The resigning staffers belonged to a now-defunct unit called the United States Digital Service which had been formed during Barack Obama’s presidency to address the issues associated with the malfunctioning Healthcare.gov website designed for millions of American patients looking to access insurance options as part of the Democrats’ landmark healthcare strategy.

All of them previously held senior positions at tech giants like Google and Amazon, stating in their resignation letters that their motives for moving to the public sector were purely altruistic.

That was upended with Trump’s preeminence of Musk. As Trump was being sworn into the office, the staffers observed, “We got pulled into multiple rounds of discussions which felt like the tip of the iceberg for the covert and chaotic style of work at Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.”

As revealed by the staffers, individuals who had White House visitors badges, some of whom chose to remain anonymous, probed the impartial workers about their credentials and political inclinations. Some of them claimed things that appeared to show that they had very little experience in the field. Most were young and seemed to be driven by ideology and the fandom of Musk – not fostering any advancement in government technology.

“Some of the interviewers I have dealt with did not give their names, posed questions on political loyalty, tried to faction colleagues, and showed very low technical proficiency,” the staffers noted in the letter. “This raised a lot of threats in terms of security.” Earlier this month, approximately 40 employees from the office were dismissed. They wrote that the termination inflicted a monumental blow to the government’s capacity to manage and protect its technological infrastructure.

“ Do these civil servants put their efforts toward modernizing Social Security, healthcare, veteran services, tax filing, disaster relief, student aid, and other important matters? Yes,” reads the resignation letter. “These actions put millions of Americans in a vulnerable situation who depend on these services day in and day out. Without their technology know how, these critical systems and the data of Americans become increasingly susceptible.” Of the 65 remaining staff the majority decided to contribute to DODGE’s government cutting scheme. Tuesday saw a third of them resign.

“SKIP” SYSTEM

"Due to the relentless efforts by Schneier and his colleagues, service providers now have to, at the barest minimum, give due consideration to their users privacy when deploying services,” they penned. “There might not be a need for all of this." I mean, crypto tokens have a tendency of losing value at an alarming rate whereas stable coins are just yet another means of facilitating transactions in the digital world. Okay, I get it. This is why I made my linkers not care at all about their functions; they simply joined in so long as their level of intelligence allowed.

After the covert meeting with Musk, however, report are claiming he was set for more disruptions, as in the viral post he captioned, “The danger isn't democracy, it is BUREAUCRACY”? Haha. For a simplicity, I am still pondering the latter part of that statement. Does it hold any truth at all? Furthermore, the answer to that surely depends on context, which gives us endless levels of possibilities.

He spent the better part of last week socializing at the gathering of Conservative Political Action Conference just outside Washington where his proclaim of wide publicity ignores common logic and any degree of rationality relative to the militarization of borders while parading over his head the gaudy Chinese chainsaw presented by Argentinian’s president Javier Milei.

“That there is the great axe of bureaucracy,” from the surface Musk speaks louder in favor of democracy without any regard to structures that restrain his otherwise simple way of thinking.

Regardless, Musk has sought to retain some technical skills, with the majority of layoffs in the Digital Service office being targeted at individuals in design, product management, human resource, and contracting positions, as per discussions with several current and former employees.

One of the 40 employees that were let go at the beginning of this month was not an engineer; the one engineer that was let go was an extremely vocal and politically involved employee by the name of Jonathan Kamens. In an interview with AP, he expressed his strong beliefs that he was fired because of public support towards the Democrat- Vice President Kamala Harris, as well as being extremely critical of Musk on his private blog and in conversations with coworkers.

“Like I said, there is a lot of controversy surrounding his narrative and doing critial work and supportting towards the narrative. I am entirely being paid by the American Government and in my belief case is completely inappropriate. Elon Musk is.” Kamens said.

Some veterans at US Digital service, who requested anonymity to avoid being blacklisted, spoke about recall and some sort of stunning realization, which Musk and his team are slowly coming across, which led them to shudder about the operational methodology of the government. A lot of them have come to understand what requires more caution in the public arena than in the private sector, especially with respect to what the government does.

Owing to one’s position, the phrase “Move fast and break things,” has different implications for different people. While it may not resonate with an average person, business owners may endorse it. For entrepreneurs, risks are well calculated and any damage incurred is picked up by them alone. However, in the case of governance, actions have far-reaching consequences. Schachter, who was until last month the Chief Information Officer of the US Department of Transportation, expresses this best. To him, the breaking of some metaphorical glass sheds light on the reality of his expression. He continues “When you break things in government, you’re breaking things that belong to people who didn’t sign up for that.” Schachter, to many, makes a fair argument against the unsafe approach towards governance.

Formed a little over a decade ago, USDS single handedly assisted in creating a portal where veterans could access free tax services without the hassle of third parties. Now they are able to claim benefits and services without spending billions on commercial agencies like TurboTax. Furthermore, the United States government can now streamline the purchase of technological products and systems.

Fighting battles over resources can be just as tiring as actually utilizing them. Reducing hierarchy and boundaries between agencies allows for greater innovation and creativity to foster, especially across departments filled with CIOs that would prefer to call the shots. USDS had uncontrolled power government wide, much stemming from their mandate to act for the White House and improve service for the American citizen.

Leavitt, spokesman for the White House, is one of three members of the administration sued by The Associated Press on first and fifth amendment claims. The AP maintains the three are retaliating against the news agency on account of the agency's editorial stand. The White House argues that the AP is disobeying an executive order mandating a reference to The Gulf of Mexico as The Gulf of America.
