Artificial sweeteners, often called sugar substitutes, are commonly used by people with diabetes and those aiming for fast weight loss. However, new findings raise concerns about their impact on appetite and body weight. Instead of aiding weight reduction, they might actually lead to increased hunger and even weight gain.

Research on Sucralose and Brain Function

A study published in Nature Metabolism by researchers from the University of Southern California explored how sucralose—a popular artificial sweetener—affects brain function and hunger regulation. The study involved 75 participants with different body weights. They consumed water, drinks with sucralose, and drinks with regular sugar in separate sessions.

Brain scans showed that sucralose activates the hypothalamus, the brain area that controls hunger. This effect was especially strong in individuals with obesity, triggering a notable increase in appetite.

How Sucralose Works

Sucralose, used in diet sodas, baked goods, and chewing gum, is around 600 times sweeter than sugar and contains zero calories. Although promoted as a healthier alternative, sucralose does not stimulate the release of hormones like insulin and GLP-1, which normally help signal satiety. This lack of hormonal response may lead to food cravings and overeating.

Expert Opinion on Artificial Sweeteners

Dr. Kathleen Alanna Page, the study’s lead researcher, stated that artificial sweeteners trick the brain into expecting calorie intake. When these calories do not arrive, the brain compensates by increasing food cravings and altering eating habits. This reaction could explain why some users of artificial sweeteners end up consuming more calories.

Health Considerations

These findings suggest a need to rethink the use of artificial sweeteners. While they may seem like a healthier sugar alternative, they can disrupt hunger signals and encourage overeating—particularly in people who are already overweight.
