As the U.S. continues an aggressive approach to its trade war, Trump is asking that his senior aides consider implementing tougher tariffs. This was reported by Washington Post on Saturday, who cited four informants.
As much as there have been calls from Trump’s Inner Circle on Wall Street and on Capitol Hill to adopt a more tactful position, he seems to be focused on reshaping the economy with comprehensive trade actions.
According to the report, Trump has not shifted from his stance of adopting tougher measures; in fact, he is pushing for a universal tariff that would target most imports regardless of the country of origin.
Comment requests made to the White House were ignored.
Trump, according to the Post, has expressed a known regret of foregone comprehensive tariffs during his first term, attributing implementation failures on advisors who persuaded him to scale back. Trump’s aides reported wanting to implement a comprehensive tariff, but there were doubts on how serious those proposals were made.
He has reportedly told aides that tariffs represent a win for America because they bring back manufacturing jobs while adding trillions in revenue for the government, the Post reports. On Friday, Trump expressed that he was willing to negotiate with countries looking to skirt American tariffs, but maintained that those negotiations would begin after his administration instantiates retaliatory taxes on April 2.
