In a first-of-its-kind move, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has announced that all fish and meat shops within city limits will remain closed during the Navratri festival. This decision was unanimously approved at an executive meeting held on Thursday.

The announcement was formally made by Mayor Ashok Tiwari on Friday. He stated that the decision was taken in view of the religious importance of Kashi (another name for Varanasi) and to respect the sentiments of devotees during the sacred nine-day festival.

The Navratri festival is set to begin on March 30 and conclude on April 6, 2025. Mayor Tiwari also warned that strict action will be taken against any shopkeeper found violating the order.

This move marks a significant administrative stance in a city known for its deep spiritual and cultural roots, particularly during Hindu festivals.
