Following the release of purported WhatsApp chat screenshots between Trinamool Congress MPs Kalyan Banerjee and Kirti Azad, senior TMC leader Sougata Roy has spoken out, expressing regret and embarrassment over the public dispute.

“This should not have happened,” Roy said, urging all political parties to maintain internal privacy. He further called on party chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to take appropriate action.

Alleged Altercation at Election Commission Headquarters

According to BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, the conflict started on April 4, 2024, when the TMC MPs visited the Election Commission of India (ECI) to submit a memorandum. The controversy arose when:

One MP skipped a scheduled meeting at Parliament to sign the document and went directly to the EC office.

Another MP, reportedly angered by the bypassing of protocol, confronted him at the Commission, leading to a heated argument.

Malviya claims the argument escalated to the point where police were asked to intervene.

Malviya shared videos and chat screenshots on his social media, alleging that the disagreement later continued in the ‘AITC MP 2024’ WhatsApp group, with members taking sides.

The "Versatile International Lady" Reference Adds Mystery

The screenshots, which appeared to show personal barbs between the two MPs, also included a reference to a “versatile international lady,” allegedly a party MP. One message quoted Banerjee saying,

“Not a single boyfriend stood with her,”
while accusing Kirti Azad of continuing the same "internal politics" that led to his expulsion from the BJP.

Malviya mocked the internal strife, saying,

“This is the stuff legends are made of...”
He added that the identity of the "versatile international lady" is still a mystery for the public to unravel.

Party Leaders Caught on Camera

The shared videos purportedly show:

Kalyan Banerjee, visibly agitated

Derek O’Brien, attempting to calm the situation

Several women MPs present during the exchange

In one section, Banerjee reportedly claimed he did not earn his MP post through any quota or political defection, taking an apparent dig at his fellow MP.

No Official Party Statement Yet on Disciplinary Action

While Sougata Roy has publicly addressed the incident, there has been no official party announcement regarding disciplinary steps. However, Roy’s remarks may indicate that the leadership is considering internal review of the matter.
