The different visa restrictions explained
Each nation possesses a specific set of defined rules for incoming travelers.
In broad strokes, restrictions differ based on the need for some form of approval prior to arrival.
While specific instructions may differ, most countries abide by one of the five following visa regulations:
1. Visa-free
Every destination flagged as ‘visa-free’ has neither a visa stamp nor documentation needed for entry.
In most situations, only a valid passport is required.
2. Visa Required
Travelers wishing to visit such a location need to secure a visa before traveling there. This process is usually done in-person at the nearest embassies or consulates of that specific country. In many cases, visa bookings are needed and long waiting times are not uncommon, so travelers should try to plan ahead.
3. Visa on Arrival (VOA)
A visa on arrival (VOA) destination means that for such countries, a legal visa is mandatory for entry, but it can be granted at the airport. Therefore, there is no need for prior approvals or paperwork submissions before travel. The processing is done at the immigration and border control of the respective countries and most airports have counters for this.
4. E-visa
As mentioned, e-visas refers to cases where visas are required for certain countries but the application is made online and the visa granted is digital. This is more accommodating for intending travelers.
5. Electronic Travel Authority (ETA)
Even though countries marked with an ETA distinction do not require travelers to secure a visa prior to their journey, a different form of authentication is needed. It is often quicker and easier than applying for a visa, making travel to these places easier. It is worth mentioning that in most cases ETAs are limit designed for short-term visits, unlike some visas which can be valid for much longer periods.
