According to reports, well-known actress Neetu Chandra is taking a tough stance against obscenity in music by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Patna High Court against singer Yo Yo Honey Singh’s latest hit, Maniac.

Chandra’s petition goes further than just addressing obsenities in Chaundhani Songs, as she seeks to suppress all obscene Bhojpuri as well as Hindi songs. Additionally, she pleaded with the court to lay sanctions against misleading ill-mannered artists, claiming that the vulgar lyrics are too inappropriate for school-going girls and painting society in a negative manner. In her plea, Chandra pointed out that such songs are bound to affect women exploitation and urged stiffer measures to be put in place to stop such music from being produced.

While being a Bollywood actress and producing acclaimed Bhojpuri and Maithili movies, Chandra is originally from Patna.

Chandra has launched a scathing critique against the song, arguing that it “shows blatant sexualization,” lowering women to “mere sex objects.” She even claimed that it “vulgarizes” the use of the Bhojpuri language, purpose which, in her opinion, is the complete opposite of the essence of women empowerment. She is pursuing this legal course to make both the artists and the industry, bear the consequences while drawing attention to the irresponsible manner through which culture and social issues are approached in the content.

Discussing this issue with India TV, Neetu stated, “The crude Bhojpuri and Hindi songs have made it impossible for girls and women in Bihar to attend school and college without having to look at the ground. These songs have made it such that women do not wish to watch TV at home. Many singers who sing such songs have become popular today which is bound to hinder progress in society and the country.”

Neetu Chandra has again encouraged the people of Bihar to vigorously fight against such songs, asserting the necessity to combat such indecent content. She claimed that these singers and songwriters must be dealt with legally.

The Senior Advocate Nivedita Nirvikar is leading the case registered in the Patna High Court as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL). Chandra, like everyone else who is socially aware, hopes that this legal move will provide for rigorous controls on lyrics and the portrayal of women in music.
