Social Welfare Minister G Parameshwara stated that the cabinet will consider the caste census report after consulting all the ministers due to the overwhelming comments from the public and political sphere regarding the report's accuracy and motives.
The preliminary discussions conducted on the 3rd of March 2024 resulted in the cabinet meeting scheduled for 2 May 2024 being listed as 'inconclusive.'
Defending this exercise, Parameshwara claims: "The census is without a doubt one of the most scientific surveys that this state has conducted." He adds, heavily justifying this statement by claiming “the estimate of households surveyed stands at 1.37 crore with both residents and supervisors signing to confirm the information."
Adding to that bold statement, he states, “The survey goes as far as elucidating whether a bore well attempted at being dug by a man ended up yielding water.”
The Vokkaligas and Veerashaiva Lingayats’ Dominance in the State Is Uncontestable
Defending this exercise, Parameshwara claims “The census is without a doubt one of the most scientific surveys that this state has conducted." He adds, heavily justifying this statement by claiming “the estimation of households surveyed stands at 1.37 crore with residents and supervisors signing to confirm the information.”
He states, “the survey even shall include details such as whether a borewell attempted at being dug by a man ended up yielding water.”
Several community leaders claimed their voices have not been heard.
Support From OBC And Dalit Groups
In addition to everything, Dalit and OBC groups have also supported the report, demanding it to be made public without delay and put into action. They contend that the government has utilized ₹160 crore of taxpayer money for the survey, and as such, the data is vital for planning social initiatives.
Relate To Internal Reservation Within Scheduled Castes
Some opposition critics raised eyebrows on why the same data from a census of castes was not utilized for an internal reservation framework for SCs, rather than conducting a new survey.
Parameshwara answered that the commission was set up before the submission of the report on the caste census will now be tasked to use the two datasets. This commission is meant to recommend how the internal reservations will be divided among the 17% quota allocated for 101 SCs. This commission expects to complete its report within two months.
Controversy Over the Removing of Janivara Incident At CET Exam Centers
On the other controversy, Brahmins students of both CET examination centers in Bidar and Shivamogga were reported to be instructed to take off Janivaras before entering the examination centers. Parameshwara disparaged such reports.
Describing the event as a “big mistake,” he emphasized actions of this nature are beyond the acceptable bound and there are no guidelines outlining such conduct. “These were individual decisions and not ordered by any official directive,” he remarked.
