Often associated with high sugar content and the risk of diabetes, these beverages contain another hidden threat—phosphoric acid—which can significantly weaken bones over time.

How Cold Drinks Affect Bones

According to physiotherapist and nutritionist Dr. Rebecca Pinto, cold drinks often contain phosphoric acid, a substance added to give them a foamy appearance. However, this acid can have serious consequences on bone strength.

Phosphoric acid binds with calcium in the body, making it harder for the body to absorb this essential mineral. As a result, calcium levels decline, directly affecting bone density. People who consume soft drinks frequently may face a higher risk of developing conditions like osteoporosis and fractures—even at a young age.

Dr. Pinto warns that a 20-year-old who regularly drinks soda could end up with bone health similar to someone in their 60s.

Research Backing the Concerns

Scientific research supports these claims. A seven-year follow-up study by the National Library of Medicine has found that a high intake of soft drinks is linked to an increased risk of bone fractures.

Additionally, The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that regular consumption of cold drinks may reduce bone mineral density, further increasing vulnerability to injuries.

Overlooked Impact of Soda

While the negative effects of sugary drinks on weight, heart health, and dental hygiene are well-known, their impact on bones is less discussed but equally serious. Bone health, especially in young individuals, should not be ignored. Frequent soda consumption could silently contribute to early-onset bone issues.
