OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, recently revealed that over 700 million images were generated within just one week of launching image capabilities in ChatGPT. More than 130 million users engaged with the new feature, making it one of the most explosive rollouts in the platform’s history.
Sharing the milestone on social media platform X, Lightcap emphasized the creativity and imagination demonstrated by users globally, while also acknowledging the infrastructure challenges caused by such rapid adoption.
India Emerges as OpenAI’s Fastest-Growing Market
In the same post, Lightcap highlighted India as the fastest-growing market for OpenAI, marking a significant shift in the global AI adoption landscape. Accompanied by the Indian flag and a flexed bicep emoji, his message celebrated India's central role in embracing and pushing the boundaries of generative AI.
OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman echoed this sentiment earlier, writing on X: “What’s happening with AI adoption in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the explosion of creativity — India is outpacing the world.”

AI Creativity Surges Amid Rising Demand
Lightcap praised the “inspiring range of visual creativity” displayed by ChatGPT users and thanked the community for its patience as OpenAI’s technical teams work “around the clock” to keep up with soaring demand. The rollout of visual generation has shown how AI can democratize artistic expression and boost productivity.
India Leads in Agentic AI Adoption
Supporting this global trend, a recent Deloitte report found that over 80% of Indian firms are actively exploring Agentic AI—autonomous systems capable of decision-making and task execution. This positions India as a rising leader in advanced AI applications, particularly in enterprise settings.
Altman, who visited India in February 2025, reiterated the country’s strategic importance in shaping the future of AI. His comments underline how India is not just consuming AI, but actively shaping its evolution through innovation and scale.
