The world is waiting eagerly for astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore who have been living in the International Space Station (ISS) for over 9 months. Their return journey is scheduled for today, March 18, 2025. Alongside this, speculation about the duo’s health and nutritional intake during their stay at the ISS are the hot topics of discussion right now.

Williams and Wilmore stirred the public’s eye in 2024 when they were spotted looking healthier than previously suspected. Williams in particular claimed that the change in her appearance was a by-product of fluid shifts caused by the weightlessness of space.

Do you marvel what Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore had for supper aboard the ISS? Astounding right? Don't be.

As per NASA's current plan, Williams and Wilmore are planned to begin their 17 hour trek back to Earth at 10:35 IST after undocking from the station. However, there are some holes to fill when it comes to these astronauts’ well being and diet. According to a report from The New York Post published on November 18, the two were fueling themselves with pizza, roast chicken and shrimp cocktails while aboard the ISS.

The New York Post infers that the physicians attending at the space agency seemed to still be taking care of the health as well diet of the astronauts.

During the morning meal

A source close to the troubled Starliner mission informed NYP that the breakfast served to the astronauts included cereals with tuna, powdered milk, and other foods, and the specialists made sure to monitor the overall caloric intake of the crew.

Soups, meat and eggs in Space

Space food consists of eggs and meat that can be eaten after reheating, as opposed to on Earth, where they have to be cooked. Water is needed in space for dehydrated soup, stew, and casserole, the ingredients which must be filled from the space station’s fresh water supply stored in a 530 gallon tank.

Fresh water recycling

Along with the 530 gallon tank for fresh water, the ISS uses a water reclaim system that converts waste water from urine and sweat. That basically means very little of such liquid will go to waste.
