On Wednesday, the Central Government introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, presented by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju. This move sparked a broad debate among parliamentarians from various parties. While opposition parties and several Muslim organizations oppose the bill, current parliamentary numbers suggest that the bill is likely to pass in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Security Tightened in Uttar Pradesh Following Bill Introduction

Muzaffarnagar: Police on High Alert

In response to the bill’s introduction, law enforcement in Uttar Pradesh has heightened security, especially in sensitive areas of Muzaffarnagar. A flag march was conducted under the leadership of District Magistrate Umesh Mishra and Senior Superintendent of Police Abhishek Singh. Key areas, including Khalapar, were covered in the operation. Police are also using drones for aerial surveillance to ensure law and order.

Sambhal: Flag Marches Conducted

In Sambhal district, a similar security exercise was undertaken. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Shreesh Chandra, flag marches were carried out in areas under Sambhal and Nakhasa police stations. Chandra confirmed that the situation remains peaceful and that social media is being monitored to prevent the spread of misinformation. Drones are also deployed to enhance area surveillance.

Waqf Board: Land Ownership and Valuation

According to the Ministry of Minority Welfare, as of December 2022, the Waqf Board holds 8,65,644 immovable properties across India. This includes approximately 9.4 lakh acres of land, with an estimated market value of ₹1.2 lakh crore. The Waqf Board is currently the largest non-government landholding entity in India, with property holdings significant enough to accommodate the equivalent of three cities the size of Delhi.
