The domestic stock market welcomed the beginning of the new year on Wednesday and closed with a jump. The benchmark of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), Sensex, closed at a level of 78,507.41 with a sharp jump of 368.4 points. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) index Nifty 50 also closed at the level of 23742.90 at the end of trading with a gain of 98.1 points. The Indian stock market gained about half a percent on the first day of the new year 2025, led by select giants like HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M).
Top gainer and loser stocks
In today's trade, 24 out of 30 Sensex stocks closed in the green. At the end of trading, the top Nifty gainers were Davanagere Sugar Company Limited, Fos India Limited, Century Plyboards (India) Limited, Techno Electric and Engineering Company Limited and Strides Pharma Science Limited. Whereas, the top losers were TVS Holdings Limited, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Limited, DSJ Keep Learning Limited, TimesCan Logistics (India) Limited and Can Fin Homes Limited.
Out of the 4,064 stocks listed on the BSE, 2,741 rose, 1,226 fell and 97 remained unchanged. Also, 374 stocks touched their upper circuit, while 205 stocks touched their lower circuit. In today's trade, the BSE Midcap index rose 0.5% and the BSE Smallcap index rose 1%. The BSE SME IPO index also registered a strong gain of 1.7%.
Sensex jumped 8.16% in 2024
According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹4,645.22 crore on Tuesday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.88% to $74.64 a barrel. Here, in the entire 2024, the Sensex jumped 5,898.75 points or 8.16% and the Nifty gained 1,913.4 points or 8.80%. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Wednesday reported that total wholesales in December 2024 rose 30 per cent to 1,78,248 units as against 1,37,551 units in the same month a year ago.
Among Sensex stocks on Wednesday, Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, Power Grid, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank rose. Tata Steel, Adani Ports, Zomato, HCL Tech, State Bank of India, Hindustan Unilever and Tech Mahindra declined.
