Eli Lilly became the first US company in the pharmaceutical sector to set its foot in India when it launched Mounjaro for patients suffering from diabetes and obesity after obtaining …authorization from Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) on Thursday

This wonder drug priced at Rs 3500 for the starting dose of 2.5mg helps in the management treatment of diabetes Type two as well as obesity while enabling significant value addition in terms of weight loss. During clinical trials, Mounjaro was able to bring about as much as 22.5% reduction in body weight which is around 24 kg.


According to phase III trial results, over 50% of patients reported weight reduction exceeding the mark of 20%. With the success of managing both diabetes and obesity, the Mounjaro is predicted to bring a huge shift in medicine practice and serve as a substitute for bariatric surgery which otherwise comes with higher costs and risks.

As per assessment from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), more than 11% of the population suffers from diabetes. The relationship that exists between obesity and diabetes Type 2 is complex.

After Mounjaro received approval for Type 2 diabetes in 2022, doctors began prescribing it off-label for weight loss. As with any medication, there are side effects, including nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation stomach pain, and even acute kidney injury.
