As per the Hindu calendar, the first solar eclipse (Surya Grahan) of 2025 will occur on March 29, during the Amavasya of Chaitra month. In astrology, this period, known as Sutak, is considered inauspicious. Special care is advised, particularly for pregnant women, who are believed to be more sensitive to the eclipse's effects.

Precautions for Pregnant Women During Surya Grahan

To ensure well-being for both mother and unborn child, here are key guidelines to follow during the solar eclipse:

1. Stay Indoors

Pregnant women should remain indoors during the eclipse period and avoid direct exposure to the eclipse, even through windows or TV screens.

2. Do Not Watch the Eclipse

It is advised not to view the solar eclipse, as traditional beliefs suggest this could negatively affect the unborn baby.

3. Avoid Using Sharp Objects

Needles, scissors, threads, and any sharp objects should not be used during the eclipse. These items are believed to carry symbolic and spiritual risk during this time.

4. Focus on Spiritual Practices

Staying calm and engaging in chanting or meditation is encouraged. Reciting the Santan Gopal Mantra is considered especially beneficial for expecting mothers during this period.

5. Avoid Cooking and Eating

Cooking or consuming food during the eclipse is not advised. According to tradition, food prepared or eaten during this time is considered inauspicious.

6. Do Not Sleep During Eclipse

Pregnant women should avoid sleeping during the eclipse hours. Scriptures suggest it may negatively affect the health of the unborn child.

7. Avoid Cutting Vegetables

Refrain from chopping vegetables or fruits during the eclipse, as this is also viewed as an inauspicious activity during the Sutak period.

8. Avoid Touching Deity Idols

Do not touch images or idols of Gods during the eclipse. It’s recommended to refrain from any religious activities involving idols until the eclipse ends.

9. Take a Ritual Bath Post-Eclipse

After the eclipse concludes, take a bath with water mixed with Gangajal (Ganges water) to purify yourself. Begin any new activity only after cleansing.

10. Perform Donations

Donating items like grains, fruits, clothes, or food to the needy is considered highly auspicious post-eclipse. It is believed to yield multiple times more spiritual merit.
