WhatsApp has started supporting setting a default application for messages and calls on an iPhone. Therefore, iPhone users can now set WhatsApp as their primary application for messaging and calling with the new iOS 18.2 update.
WhatsApp’s new integration with iOS 18.2
The most recent update for WhatsApp on iOS devices contains new features that integrate with Apple’s other outgoing updates, particularly the one which allows users to set a preferred messaging and phone application. Therefore, users on iOS who have WhatsApp installed will be able to select it over the native Phone or Messages apps which come pre-installed on iPhones whenever they want to tap on a phone number.
How to set WhatsApp as the default app
This feature is being implemented for all users regardless of whether they were part of the beta program or not, however, the timeframe in which it will be simple to access for everyone may vary. This means that for some users, it might take longer. As with any new features, users will have to update their apps and install the latest version available on the app store. After completing the update, users can go to their settings, then look for Apps > Default Apps and set their preferred messaging and calling application to WhatsApp.
Apple ‘s default app alteration extends beyond messaging. The ability to set calls and messages as the default selection for third-party apps is part of Apple's ongoing attempt to provide greater customization to developers and users. In addition to messages and calls, users on iPhones have the option to set different default applications for web browsing, email, call filtering, translation, password management, and payments (in certain areas). In the European Union, Apple has advanced even further by permitting users to modify the default maps application.
