Obesity is a worrying phenomenon that seems to be affecting every age group. Childhood obesity poses an even greater threat. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5) states that childhood obesity in India has risen 126 percent over the last 15 years; it stood at 1.5 percent in 2005-06 and current figures are 3.4 percent for 2019-21.

A new report by Foundation People-Centric Health Systems (FPHS) states that a high global rate of childhood obesity is projected to double by 2035 which should be of great concern to policymakers.

Urbanization and technological advancement are some of the main causes of sedentary lifestyles which lead to juvenile obesity. To control obesity, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends a healthy diet, exercise, sufficient sleep, limited use of gadgets, and an overall healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Diet: Maintaining a balanced diet limits weight gain. Fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat must be part of daily meals along with avoiding fast food and sugary drinks.

Encourage physical activities: Help kids get involved with chores and ask them to walk more. As a parent, prioritize and encourage regular physical activities for children as it helps in improving their health and keeping their weight in check. According to NHLBI guidelines, children need to do moderate to vigorous activities for at least 60 minutes every day. Dancing, cycling, or outdoor games are some of the many activities that can help keep kids engaged. Children often adapt by imitating, so make sure to participate in exercises with your children so that working out becomes an enjoyable family pastime.

Managing increased use of screens: Obesity can result from a sedentary lifestyle, which is stimulated by excessive screen time. NHLBI recommends no more than two hours of non-educational screen time for children daily. Consider giving your child alternative activities such as board games, reading, or going outside in order to better use their energy.

And then early to rise. Now’s the time to put the tried and tested saying into practice. Be sure your child sleeps on time. Enough sleep is important for the physical and mental wellbeing of a child as well as controlling his or her weight. Studies conducted by the NHLBI have shown that children of all ages who do not get enough sleep have a greater chance of becoming obese. Recommended sleep time tends to change with age, younger children need more sleep to aid in their ever-growing alabaster bodies.
