Most people consider pelvic pain as something trivial. In some cases, it may very well be, but there are instances when it signals deeper underlying issues. Even if one experiences mild, episodic, or persistent pelvic aching, the absence of action may bring forth additional repercussions.
However, these aches and pains may be forewarning the presence of more serious medical issues, such as infections, which could escalate if left unchecked. “In my clinical practice, I have noticed that patients often pay no heed to bodily messages, and enable complications to erupt that could have otherwise been nipped in the bud,” said Dr. Shweta Mendiratta, Associate Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Marengo Asia Hospital, Faridabad. “When the pelvis steps into the picture, peripheral aches may not simply remain peripheral anymore,” she adds.
Many women tend to overlook such pain, attributing it to the usual menstrual cycle. “While menstruation may result in cramps, it is essential to understand that not all pain is normal. Issues like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, and PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) each carry with them the risk of permanent damage in case they are left untreated,” explains Dr. Mendiratta.
These conditions can potentially lead to more complex consequences of permanent infertility, alarming infections, or sometimes more drastic measures such as extensive surgeries. Getting the right medical assistance can help to alleviate the symptoms before they transform into something detrimental.
Dr. Mendiratta states that occasional discomfort can develop into pain if untreated. She says, “Persistent pelvic pain can affect your quality of life and make day-to-day activities like working, exercising, and socializing extremely difficult. Chronic pain can result in nerve sensitization, meaning the longer the pain continues to exist, the harder it becomes to treat.”
Chronic pain, once attained, is steeper in cost as it requires more medical attention and aid in the long run. “If introduced into the picture today, a pelvic pain would serve such long term benefits that not only one’s physical quality goes up, the mental aspect too is positively affected,” remarks Dr. Mendiratta.
She goes on to explain six reasons not to let pelvic pain destructively linger:
It is a signal unto itself: It is self evident that pelvic pain could lead one into worrying morbidity conditions like endometriosis and fibroid which if untreated can lead to an infection.
It is a silent pain remover: Unrestrained and free pelvic pain is just like an unresolved issue for a while that bundles up into something worse in the long run.
It can disrupt fertility: If left uncontained, PCOS and other infections can have a drastic influence on the reproductive system.
It can disrupt an active lifestyle: Long term constant pain can leads to work and even simple enjoyable social engagements to appear difficult and thus result in a decline in one’s overall quality of life.
It increases the risk of complications: Not receiving treatment in a timely fashion can cause serious infections that may require surgical procedures, among other types of advanced medical treatment.
It can impact mental health: Prolonged aching can aid in the development of anxiety, mental strain, and feelings of hopelessness, having an impact on one’s overall welfare.
