Actor Zahan Kapoor, part of Bollywood’s illustrious Kapoor lineage, is embracing both legacy and individuality. The 33-year-old actor, known for his role in Netflix’s Black Warrant, combines aristocratic charm with contemporary dedication. As the grandson of Shashi Kapoor and Ramesh Sippy, he carries a rich cinematic and theatrical legacy.
Balancing Heritage and Modern Ambitions
Zahan’s debut performance in Hansal Mehta’s Faraaz was far from the grand launch typically seen for Kapoor family members. Still, he embraced the opportunity as a way to grow as an artist. He later earned acclaim for his role in Black Warrant, a Netflix series based on Tihar jail’s former superintendent Sunil Gupta.
Speaking about his family’s influence, Zahan says, “I don’t feel burdened, I feel inspired. It motivates me to be thorough and devoted.” His maternal grandfather Ramesh Sippy, and paternal grandfather Shashi Kapoor, represent two iconic film lineages. Zahan admires the diversity in their work—from mainstream hits like Sholay to nuanced films like Junoon and The Householder.
Early Influences and Artistic Evolution
Though initially uninterested in films, Zahan credits aunt Sanjna Kapoor for guiding him towards theatre. His first professional experience came through assisting theatre director Sunil Shanbag. That hands-on exposure led to further study at the National Youth Theatre in London and workshops at Adishakti near Auroville.
He debuted in theatre with Pitaji Please by Makarand Deshpande, a performance that eventually paved the way for the unreleased series Bandwaale. His journey reflects a deep connection with storytelling, craft, and collaboration.
Learning the Ropes in Cinema
Zahan's entry into cinema came with Faraaz (2022), a tense drama based on the 2016 Dhaka terror attack. Though the film received mixed reviews, critics noted Zahan’s potential. He says, “It was an honest attempt at telling a meaningful story. People said they wanted more of me, and I take that as a compliment.”
In Black Warrant, Zahan’s portrayal of Sunil Gupta stood out. His preparation involved detailed research, dialect training, and emotional depth. Despite working under four directors and the showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane, Zahan managed to anchor the series, earning 2.3 million views within days of release.
The Theatre Connection Runs Deep
Zahan continues his family’s strong association with theatre through Prithvi Theatre, which he helps manage. He says, “It’s a privilege — a hard one — but one I cherish.” His belief in the roots of theatre and the scale of cinema fuels his ambition to strike a balance between both mediums.
In 2023, he worked with fellow actor Aditya Rawal on the anti-war play Siachen, directed again by Deshpande. The production highlighted the commitment of new-generation artists to meaningful, layered storytelling.
Life Beyond the Limelight
Zahan enjoys poetry, especially works by Nida Fazli and Gulzar, and finds inspiration in Hindi literature and philosophy. He also practices meditation, breathwork, and horse-riding to stay grounded. Music, too, plays a big part in his life, with an eclectic taste that spans from Indian classical to Portuguese and Nigerian jazz.
His biggest motivator? “The fear that I have to live up to the advantages I’ve been given. It’s my duty to perform at my best.”
