
In Tripura Waqf’s amendment Act triggered massive protests which ultimately resulted in the injury of 18 police officers in the Unakoti district of Tripura on Saturday. Jayanta Karmakar who is the sub divisional police officer of Kailashsher along with others was injured during the violence which broke out at Kubjar region which is about 20km away from Unakoti.
The police have made a total of eight arrests in connection with the violence involving police officers and members of the protest.
Approximately four thousand members for the ‘joint movement committee’ which is led by Md Badruzzaman who is the president of Congress Unakoti district organized a huge rally which was aimed at ripping the Act. As reported by PTI, some sort of a tussle took place between protestors and security personnel. Soon after that things escalated and the protesters started throwing stones and bottles at the police.
Relating to the status violence, Sukanta Sen Chowdhury who is the officer in charge of Kailashar police station said that for the sake of controlling the violent protestors, the police were forced to use physical force and launch gas canisters to disperse the crowd.
An employee said, “We have registered an FIR for the assault on officers. Compared to the reported cases, eight have already been detained. We are still looking into the situation.”
Badruzzaman, at the press conference, asserted that they held a peaceful rally. But some other actors designed to escalate the violence at our peaceful rally for their own purposes. We will continue our agitation for the withdrawal of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, he stated.
