Early Life and Education
Alakh Pandey, born in October 1991 in Prayagraj, faced financial hardships from an early age. His father, Satish Pandey, worked as a private contractor. Alakh completed his primary education at Bishop Johnson School. Although he aspired to crack the IIT entrance exam, he couldn’t succeed and instead joined Harcourt Butler Technical Institute (HBTI) in Kanpur.
Dropping Out to Start Teaching
During his fourth year at HBTI, Alakh made a bold decision—he dropped out and returned to Prayagraj. To support his family, he started teaching tuition. By the time he was in Class 11, he was already earning ₹5000 per month through tuition classes.
On January 28, 2014, Alakh launched his teaching platform, Physics Wallah (PW), initially as a YouTube channel. His engaging teaching style quickly gained popularity, leading him to launch the Physics Wallah app in 2018. This step marked a turning point in his career, as the platform grew exponentially.
Physics Wallah’s Rise to a Billion-Dollar Startup
Alakh Pandey shocked the business world by building Physics Wallah into a ₹777 crore company at just 30 years old. In 2024, Physics Wallah officially became India’s 101st unicorn startup, achieving a valuation of ₹8,500 crore ($1 billion).
Rejection of Unacademy’s Offer
As Physics Wallah gained momentum, Alakh Pandey attracted interest from competitors. Unacademy, one of India’s leading edtech firms, offered him ₹4 crore, but he rejected it, choosing to build his own brand independently.
Global Expansion and Influence
Today, Physics Wallah serves millions of students, not just in India but across Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Dubai. With affordable online coaching in Physics, Mathematics, Biology, and Economics, the platform has become a go-to destination for competitive exam preparation.
