jay Shah Statement: BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Friday denied claims that the board has approached any former Australian cricketer to become India’s head coach. Current coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure is ending after next month’s T20 World Cup. Rahul Dravid is understood to have told the BCCI that he does not want any further extension in his tenure. Former Australian cricketers Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer have claimed that they have turned down the offer for the post.
Jay Shah proved Ponting and Langer wrong
Jai Shah said in a statement, ‘Neither I nor the BCCI has approached any former Australian cricketer for the post of coach. The reports in the media to this effect are completely false.’ Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer are the coaches of Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants respectively in the IPL. Indicating that an Indian coach will be chosen after Rahul Dravid, Jai Shah said, ‘Finding the right coach for the national team is a long process. We are looking for a person who has a deep understanding of the structure of Indian cricket and has reached the top with his skills.’
Is Gautam Gambhir a contender to become the next coach of Team India?
The BCCI secretary also said that it is important to have an understanding of India’s domestic cricket structure for the appointment of the next coach. Kolkata Knight Riders mentor and former batsman Gautam Gambhir is also considered to be one of the main contenders for this post. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the new head coach of Team India. The last date to apply for the head coach post is May 27, a day after the IPL final.
Rahul gave advice to Langer
The tenure of the new head coach of Team India will be for all three formats for a period of three and a half years from July 2024 to December 2027. Let us tell you that recently Justin Langer has mentioned the conversation with KL Rahul during the coaching of the Lucknow Super Giants team in IPL 2024. Justin Langer revealed that KL Rahul told him that the ‘politics and pressure’ that the coach of the Indian cricket team has to face is almost ‘a thousand times’ more than any IPL coach.
