Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Sunday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to guarantee that the state's share of parliamentary seats will not be reduced in the upcoming delimitation process. He emphasized the need for protecting states that have successfully managed population growth.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin wrote that states like Tamil Nadu, which have implemented effective population control measures, should not be penalized in the delimitation exercise. He demanded that their percentage share of seats in Parliament remain the same.

Stalin Recommends Constitutional Amendment for Fair Delimitation

Stalin further appealed to Prime Minister Modi to make a public commitment. He stressed the importance of dispelling public concerns by promising that the state's representation would stay intact. Stalin also called for a constitutional amendment in Parliament to ensure this guarantee.

"This is the only way to ensure a #FairDelimitation. I sincerely hope he will act," Stalin stated in his social media message.

Political Demands: Use 1971 Census for Delimitation

Political parties across Tamil Nadu have reiterated their stance that the delimitation of constituencies should be based on the 1971 Census data. The concern stems from fears that the 2026 Census, if used, would lead to a reduction in parliamentary representation for states that have maintained lower population growth rates.

Previously, Stalin warned that enforcing delimitation based on the upcoming Census would unfairly reduce the number of seats allocated to Tamil Nadu and other southern states.
