Suvendu Adhikari Seeks NIA Probe Into Railway Vandalism During Waqf Act Protests in West Bengal:

The West Bengal Assembly's Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, has sought the intervention of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to look into the acts of vandalism and destruction of railway assets during protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Murshidabad district.

In his correspondence with Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister of Railways, the BJP leader has directed focus to the violent acts that took place in a number of district railway stations. He highlighted the nature of protests along with the location of Murshidabad bordering Bangladesh as crucial.

The MP from West Bengal maintained a different position demanding more explanation from authorities. As he wrote,

Locating these different pieces of the puzzle would reveal the deceptively conspiratorial and twisted perpetrators and therefore identifiably prevent being victimised indefinitely.

For these reasons, he has justified that the NIA is best suited to deal with such issues related to national security and cross border crimes.

Violent Protesters Bring Train Services to Stop for Six Hours

The Eastern Railway suffered great losses from Friday-scheduled trains on New Farakka Azimganj section for about 6 hours, which was due to vandalism of railway property in the region of Dhuliandanga and Nimtita stations.

The protests in the area were extremely chaotic in nature and caused disturbances to law enforcement agencies and political leaders.

Police Arrests and Response in Murshidabad
The Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) for West Bengal, Jawed Shamim states that 118 people in relation to the violence have been arrested. During this case, police had to fire four rounds, injuring 2 individuals.

Although the area is under surveillance, the investigation phase is still ongoing. The demand for NIA intervention has added another twist to the case.
