The Supreme Court of India on Thursday provided conditional bail to Vikas Yadav for an interim period of a few days so he can tend to his mother who is unwell. Her bail was set for expiry on May 8th. From his side, Vikas Yadav was being granted a furlough from his 25 year sentence jail term which he is serving due to his conviction in the 2002 Nitish Katara Case.
Justices A S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan ordered the bail to be removed only upon completion of the necessary medical check-up accountable by a doctor’s board from AIIMS.
Other Conditions Relating to the Furlough From Jail
In moving CID procedures to other wards, it will be carried out at the medical wards. Vikas Yadav, during his leave is not permitted to move out of his house in Ghaziabad and has been sent into supervised mintact. Further restrictions places include severing contact with any other potential witnesses who could be important in the case, which include the mother of the victim, Neelam Katara.
The imposition of preliminary bail does put some requirements whereby a set limit will be changes like the need for reasons why Vikas Yadav must stay put at his residence.

A twenty year term was given to Sukhdev Pehalwan, the third accomplice, with no option for remission. The Delhi High Court confirmed the trial court's life sentence for the Yadav cousins but modified it such that they would have to serve no less than thirty years in prison without the possibility of remission. Pehalwan received a twenty-five year sentence.
Prison authorities denied Vikas Yadav's request for remission in 2024 and deemed his behavior during his time in prison as unsatisfactory.
