Celebrated martial artist and actor Shihan Hussaini passed away on Tuesday after a long battle with blood cancer. Based in Chennai, Hussaini was known not only for his expertise in karate and archery but also for his significant contributions to Tamil cinema. His death marks a major loss for the martial arts community and his many students, including actors Pawan Kalyan and Thalapathy Vijay.
Pawan Kalyan’s Devotion to Training Under Hussaini
Among his students, Telugu superstar Pawan Kalyan’s dedication left a lasting impression. In the 1990s, Hussaini had paused his teaching career to focus on a security agency. However, Pawan Kalyan persistently visited his home daily for a month, requesting training. Moved by his determination, Hussaini agreed.
Kalyan went on to live with Hussaini for over a year, fully embracing the discipline of martial arts life—cooking, cleaning, and showing humility. Interestingly, he did not disclose for months that he was the brother of megastar Chiranjeevi, preferring to be treated like any other student. His efforts earned him a black belt and the deep respect of his mentor.
Hussaini’s Diverse Talents Beyond Martial Arts
Hussaini’s impact extended beyond dojos and tournaments. He was an actor, appearing in films like Punnagai Mannan and Badri, often portraying a karate instructor. These roles helped bring martial arts into the mainstream Tamil audience.
He was also an expert archer and trained over 100 students, playing a vital role in promoting archery in Tamil Nadu. His work in sports development and athlete welfare earned him government recognition and financial support during his illness.
A Final Gift and Legacy of Inspiration
In his final days, Hussaini made a powerful gesture—donating his body to medical research. He asked that his remains be given to Sri Ramachandra Medical College, honoring its founder Ramasamy Udayar for long-standing support of his karate association.
Before passing, he reached out to Pawan Kalyan and Vijay, urging them to carry forward his mission of promoting martial arts and archery in India. This final message reflected his lifelong dedication to mentorship, discipline, and cultural pride.
