Customers of the State Bank of India (SBI) are experiencing major disruptions in mobile banking and fund transfer services. Outage tracking website Downdetector shows a spike in reports between 11:00 and 11:30 am IST, with 64% of complaints linked to mobile banking, 33% to fund transfers, and 3% to ATM-related problems.
Many users have taken to social media to share concerns about failed transactions, payment delays, and trouble accessing their accounts through the SBI app.
SBI Cites Annual Closing Activity for Scheduled Downtime
In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), SBI notified customers about planned digital service unavailability due to Annual Closing activities. The scheduled downtime is from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm (IST) on April 1, 2025.
The bank suggested customers use UPI Lite and ATM services during the maintenance window. However, the statement does not explain the earlier disruptions reported prior to 1 pm.
New UPI Rules Might Be Causing Additional Issues
Another potential factor behind the issues could be the new UPI rules that took effect on April 1, 2025. The updated rules require users to have active mobile numbers linked to their UPI accounts. Several users who haven’t updated or re-verified their mobile numbers might be facing failed transactions as a result.
No Official Statement Yet on Current Disruptions
As of now, SBI has not issued a formal explanation for the ongoing technical problems reported earlier in the day. The combination of annual system maintenance and changes in UPI regulations may be causing a temporary surge in transaction failures and access issues.
