Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again won the presidential election in Turkey. He has won the presidential election for the 11th time by defeating the Leader of the Opposition Kamal Kalchdarlu. In the run-off of the second round of elections, Erdogan won a majority and was defeated by Kemal Kalchdarlu. With this, Erdogan has once again returned to power. According to the report, Erdogan got 52% of the votes in this round, while Kalkadarlu got only 48%.

On 14 May, the election was decided in a second round with no result.

In fact, the first phase of voting for the presidential election was held on 14 May. Erdogan, head of the AKP (Justice and Development Party), won the election in the first round, receiving 49.4% of the vote. And his rival Kalachdarlu got 45 percent votes. The two leaders could not win a majority, leading to a second round of elections on Sunday.

Erdogan has been president for 20 years

In Turkey, if no candidate receives a clear majority, a run-off round is held between the two candidates who receive the most votes within two weeks. The second phase of polling was to be held on May 28. Significantly, Erdogan has been leading the country since 2003 and under his leadership has tried to make Turkey a conservative country that follows the principles of Islam. During the elections, he has also been accusing the western countries of conspiring to topple the government.

The President has all the power in Türkiye

Notably, in July 2018, a month after Erdogan won the last presidential election, Turkey replaced the parliamentary system with a presidential system. In 2017, the President’s powers were vastly increased through a referendum. Erdogan thus abolished the office of prime minister and took over the executive powers of the prime minister. This made the President the head of government in Türkiye.
