In response to global attention on Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India, Pakistan has officially distanced itself from the 26/11 accused, declaring him a Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin. The clarification was issued by Shafqat Ali Khan, spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who noted that Rana hasn’t renewed his Pakistani documents in over 20 years.

Rana to Face Trial in India Over Mumbai Terror Attacks

Rana is set to stand trial in India for his alleged role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which left 166 people dead and hundreds injured. His extradition was recently approved by the US Secretary of State, with the surrender warrant signed on February 11.

His Role in the 26/11 Attacks

Rana, alongside David Coleman Headley, allegedly facilitated the planning and logistics for the attacks. Using his immigration services business, he reportedly helped Headley pose as a US citizen while conducting reconnaissance missions across India.

Headley remains imprisoned in the US.

Rana was arrested in 2009 in connection with the conspiracy.

The Lashkar-e-Taiba-backed attacks targeted multiple Mumbai locations including the Taj Hotel, CST railway station, and Leopold Cafe.
