Pakistan: 2 Russian climbers rescued with the help of army, one is still missing

Islamabad: Pakistan’s military helicopters have rescued two Russian climbers who were part of a mountaineering team that got trapped under a huge avalanche on a remote peak in the north, an official said on Monday. According to the official, one Russian member of the team is still missing. Alpine Club of Pakistan secretary Karrar Haidri said rescue operations were underway to safely retrieve two other members of a five-member Russian team that got stranded on Gasherbrum Peak in the Karakoram mountain range after they were trapped under a huge avalanche.

Haidri said, “The mountaineering team unfortunately fell victim to a devastating disaster. While he was climbing the peak, a huge pile of snow, possibly a part of the glacier, collapsed, causing this devastating incident.” He said that a rescue operation was launched on Saturday to rescue the climbers trapped on the top of the mountain. The team had gone on an expedition to recover the body of a climber who went missing on Mount Gasherbrum in 2023. According to Haidri, there was no government advisory regarding bad weather and a pile of snow suddenly fell on the climbers. 

Many climbers have lost their lives

Gasherbrum Peak derives its name from the Gasherbrum Glacier surrounding it. “Gasherbrum” means “beautiful mountain” and the name is derived from the Balti language. The peak is famous for its challenging routes. Due to the difficulty of Gasherbrum Peak, the number of climbers who have climbed it is very low. Many climbers have lost their lives while climbing this peak. The peak is full of unique beauty and natural beauty. The glaciers and snow sheets spread around the mountain make it an unforgettable one. Gasherbrum Peak is a dream for daring and fearless climbers, but it is also a reality that the challenges here are not easy to overcome.
