By adding a new option that only captures the dialogue, Netflix made it easier than ever to watch shows and movies. It’s a helpful addition for users with hearing disabilities who appreciate less visual information.
Previously, users were limited to the CC option, meaning closed captions for deaf or hard-of-hearing users. It includes text that represents sound effects and names of the speakers. This emulated reality for some, but others struggled with reading text that only included the person’s dialogue.
The new addition means subtitles are also available to people who don’t want extraneous detail about what's happening in the background.
Why Netflix Made the Change
As Netflix continues to give users access to their platforms’ statistics, they've released footage stating almost 50 percent of their clients based in America rely on subtitles, and a portion of those users find relief in simplified versions void of additional audio puns like, [door slams] and [dramatic music playing].
With the release of YOU Season 5, Netflix has added two subtitle options:
English (only dialogue)
English (CC) (includes dialogue, sound cues, and speaker identifiers)
More Languages Coming Soon
The revision is not reserved only for English language users. Netflix intends to implement dialogue-only subtitles in all supported languages on new original shows and movies in the future.
This enables users to further customize the experience in case they find themselves in a noisy place, watching while others sleep, or simply enjoy a minimalist styling of the subtitles.
Tailor Your Subtitles
Moreover, Netflix enables its users to edit the subtitles as per their needs. To increase comfort while viewing, you can change the font, size, and color of subtitles.
