Panchsheel Heights, a residential complex in Kandivli West’s Mahavir Nagar, has taken matters into its own hands by hiring private bouncers to prevent hawkers from encroaching on public footpaths. This move comes after repeated complaints to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) failed to bring lasting results.

The 20-year-old housing society, home to over 1,000 residents, has faced continuous encroachment since the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite civic body drives to remove hawkers, residents say vendors return within 15 to 20 minutes.

Footpath Blockages Affect Daily Life

Residents have reported regular disruptions to their daily routines. Blocked footpaths have made it difficult to walk safely, shop, or escort children to school.

“Our building is opposite a school. The blocked sidewalk forces children and parents onto the road, causing traffic issues and safety hazards,” said society secretary Indukumar Amin.

Temporary Security Measure Put in Place

To tackle the issue, the society has employed bouncers via their private security agency for a 15-day period. The measure is aimed at keeping hawkers from reclaiming space cleared during civic drives.

“If hawkers return, we’re prepared to extend the arrangement,” said Sachin Sardesai, chairman of the housing society.

Political Intervention and BMC Response

Two days ago, society members sought assistance from BJP MLA Yogesh Sagar. In response, some hawkers were removed with help from BMC's R South ward officials.

However, BMC denied allegations of inaction. “We regularly conduct anti-encroachment operations and respond to complaints,” said Assistant Municipal Commissioner Manish Salve. “I’m not aware of the society hiring bouncers. That’s their internal matter.”

Parking Facility Also Under Scrutiny

Residents have also cited a nearby BMC-run pay-and-park facility as another reason for area congestion, worsening the problem of restricted movement.
