The Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), one of Windows’ most notorious features, is undergoing a cosmetic transformation. Microsoft has announced in a recent blog post that the traditional blue error screen will now appear in green for users testing Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3653. Though the content of the error remains the same, the color change is intended to modernize the interface.

Why Green?

According to Microsoft, the shift to green is a design choice aimed at better aligning with Windows 11’s aesthetic. The new color reflects the OS’s visual style while maintaining all technical details previously present on the BSOD. “We’ve simplified your experience while preserving the technical information on the screen,” Microsoft said in its update.

Could It Turn Black Too?

While Microsoft officially mentioned only the green variant, some reports suggest that the error screen might also adopt a black theme in the future, though this remains unconfirmed. The green version, for now, is exclusive to Windows Insiders in the Dev, Canary, and Beta channels.

When Will It Go Live?

This change is currently limited to beta testing, with a full rollout expected in a future Windows 11 update. For now, only testers will see the Green Screen of Death (GSOD), replacing the long-standing blue variant that has been part of Windows for over three decades.
