Manoj Kumar, the renowned actor-director known for his patriotic films, often credited Dilip Kumar as his greatest inspiration. In an interview with PTI, Kumar reflected on how his cinematic journey began at age 11, after watching Shabnam (1949). In the film, Dilip Kumar played a character named Manoj—an identity that would later become Kumar’s stage name.

“I must have been 11 years old then, but I instantly decided that if I ever became an actor, I would keep my name as Manoj Kumar,” he recalled.

That moment marked a life-changing decision for Harikishan Giri Goswami, who would go on to define Indian cinema under the name Manoj Kumar.

Fulfilling a Childhood Dream in Kranti

Years later, Manoj Kumar’s admiration for Dilip Kumar reached its peak when he both directed and acted with him in the 1981 film Kranti. The film, set against the backdrop of India’s freedom struggle, became a landmark in Indian cinema.

“We only had Dilip Kumar in mind for Kranti. When I told him the story, he agreed within two minutes. It was a dream come true for me,” said Kumar.

Written by legendary screenwriters Salim–Javed, Kranti marked Dilip Kumar’s return after a five-year break. The cast included major stars like Shashi Kapoor, Hema Malini, Shatrughan Sinha, and Parveen Babi.

On Set with a Legend

Kumar described his awe at working with his idol, observing Dilip Kumar’s calm demeanor, strong discipline, and unmatched talent. “He wasn’t someone who enjoyed flattery; he valued sincerity and hard work,” he said.

The film ran for 50 weeks and achieved golden jubilee status at the box office, cementing its place in Indian cinematic history.

Manoj Kumar’s dream of working with his inspiration came true through Kranti, a film that became the pinnacle of his career. As the film industry and fans mourn his passing, his family confirmed that his final rites will be held in a private ceremony on April 5.
