Maharashtra has announced that Hindi will be a compulsory third language for Classes 1 to 5, starting in 2025-2026 academic year. This also marks the onset of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implementation in the state.

As per the Government Resolution, students in Marathi and English medium schools will learn Hindi from Class 1. Other language mediums will have compulsory Marathi and English, where the medium of instruction will serve as the third language.

Curricular and Structural Changes as Per NEP’s Rollout
The state will adopt the NEP in 4 phases, the first being classes 1 to 5. The SCERT along with Balbharati is tasked with updating the due curriculum, textbooks, and other teaching materials.

Other than these, there are additional reforms that impact the school schedule and overhaul examinations, signifying a revamp of the state’s education system.

From ‘10+2+3’ to ‘5+3+3+4’ Model: Curriculum Shift
The policy defines school education into 5 segments; the previously adopted ‘10+2+3’ format will be turned to the ‘5+3+3+4’ structure.
The new foundational stage (5 years) will include 3 years of pre-primary and classes 1 and 2.

Preparatory Stage (3 Years): Includes Classes 3 to 5.
“Middle Stage” (3 years): Comprises Classes 6 to 8.
“Secondary Stage” (4 years): Includes Classes 9 to 12.
This change seeks to add more appropriate learning stages according to age and enhance mastery of concepts.

       Holistic Learning and Evaluation
“The NEP introduces a 'Holistic Progress Card' which replaces the grades with more comprehensive evaluation of students’ development.”

This is expected to alleviate academic stress focused on grades, promote logic, learning by doing, and shift towards holistic learning frameworks.
