In a major move towards eco-friendly urban transport, the Maharashtra cabinet has approved a policy for electric bike taxis in cities across the state. The decision was made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Sahyadri Guest House.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said the policy is designed for single passengers traveling up to 15 km, offering a low-cost, efficient, and environment-friendly commuting option.
Key Features of the E-Bike Taxi Policy
Vehicle Design: E-bikes must include a partition between the rider and passenger and a roof cover for protection during monsoons.
Passenger Safety and Fare Regulation: Safety will be a top priority, along with affordable tariffs aimed at reducing travel costs significantly—potentially down to ₹30-₹40 for routes that currently cost ₹100.
Job Creation: The initiative is expected to create over 20,000 jobs, with 10,000 in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and another 10,000 across the rest of Maharashtra.
Support for Driver Families: Children of autorickshaw and taxi drivers affiliated with government-certified organizations can apply to operate e-bike taxis. Eligible applicants will receive financial aid of ₹10,000, with additional funding available through loans.
Revenue Model and Implementation
The cabinet has approved the policy framework, and the revenue model is currently being finalized. Minister Sarnaik confirmed that further details regarding fare structures and implementation will be announced soon.
“This marks a significant first step toward achieving a pollution-free Maharashtra,” he said.
