However, Assembly Speaker barred the resolution proposed by Peoples Conference president Sajjad Lone concerning Article 370 and the Public Safety Act. Following Jammu and Kashmir’s reorganization as a Union Territory, the Reorganisation Act now grants the Speaker expanded authority to establish the House rules.
Omar Abdullah: Waqf Targeting a Specific Religion
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed concern about the national protests surrounding the bill, asserting that the legislation disproportionately affects one religious community.
"Charitable activities are linked to all religions and Muslims carry out these through Waqf. When a particular religion is targeted, there will be tension," Abdullah stated.
National Debate and Legislative Journey of the Bill
The Rajya Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Act last week after nearly 14 hours of debate, with 128 members voting in favor and 95 opposing it. The bill had earlier been cleared by the Lok Sabha following 12 hours of discussion, recording 288 votes in support and 232 against.
This move effectively amends the Waqf Act of 1995 and repeals the Mussalman Wakf Act of 1923.
Presidential Approval Finalizes the Law
President Droupadi Murmu gave her official assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Act on Saturday, marking the final step in its legislative journey.
