An unforgettable performance by Indo Warehouse, the south-asian dubstep DJ duo formed by Kunal Merchant and Armaan Gupta (Kahani), highlights Coachella 2025. The duo blend traditional indian music with modern house, vibrations and deep sounds to cultivate a soundscape that transcends imagination and resonates with all walks of life.
A Musical Celebration of Culture and Roots
Indo Warehouse set the stage on April 12th with Garba, Bhangra and Indian rhythms over thumping electronic tracks, adding deep layers to the music. The Coachella desert turned into ‘IndoChella’ as fans began to call the festival. The genres of Indo House showcased the beauty of rich Indian culture and traditions. It was a surreal experience that surpassed cultural boundaries.
According to The Hindustan Times, “A celebration that was as cultural as it was electric,” capturing the true essence of the duo’s East Meets West philosophy and how they propel it as a medium to bridge the world on a global stage.
Social Media Applauds the Performance
Social media was buzzing with admiration over the performance. Fans took to the comments section, posting “Indo Warehouse is such a vibe” and “SHEEEESH Indo Warehouse didn’t have to go so hard. #Coachella.” One user even went as far as saying “Lady Gaga is on, and these Indian DJs are stealing the show,” comparing the performance to that of Coachella headliners.
A Moment for the South Asian Diaspora
Alongside festival-goers, the set resonated on a deeper level to many in the South Asian diaspora, seemingly for more than just music. Indo Warehouse themselves commented on Instagram: “From our roots to the desert — Coachella Weekend 1 was more than a show, it was a statement.”
They showcased an incredible array of audio-visual desi-inspired performances, including re-energized tracks blended with flexibility and power, evocative enough to enthrall the heads of dhol drums. As the dhol drums sounded off and LED visuals lit up the sky over the desert, the overwhelming feeling of togetherness, identity, and pride was intensified.
The Secondary Effects of Coachella
Although Coachella draws attention for its big artists, this year's hoopla came from performance by up-and-coming artists. A user commented: "The secondary stages are often more intriguing than the main stage headliners. I liked Indo Warehouse better than Lady Gaga.”
Indo Warehouse was not the only one as other South Asian performers like Hanumankind also grabbed the limelight which demonstrates a shift in the lens of global music festivals.
Another Milestone Towards Global South Representation
By fusing Indian classical and folk music with Western house Indo Warehouse has made strides for the global desi community. Their performance at Coachella is a mark not only of achievement but of changed direction.
“With the hardware of a festival, and the ethos of a protest, we hope pavilions become a site of global movements. We hope for movements as unit of social change.” These and other lessons allow us to build new, stronger routes for the future.
