Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has stated that India’s highway network will become better than the United States within the next two years. Speaking at an event, he said, “I used to say our highway network will match the US, but now I believe it will be better.”
The minister emphasized that the road sector is progressing well and substantial transformations are expected this year and next.
India Aims for Global Leadership in Electric Vehicles
Gadkari shared his optimism about India's position in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. He predicted that the country will overtake the US in both EV adoption and manufacturing within five years.
Efforts are ongoing to reduce travel time between key cities such as Delhi, Dehradun, Jaipur, and Bengaluru through improved road connectivity.
Open Market Approach to Global EV Players
When questioned about Tesla’s potential entry into India, Gadkari responded that the country maintains an open market policy. He added that domestic manufacturers focus on quality and are ready to compete on price and innovation.
Reducing Logistics Cost to Single Digits
Gadkari reaffirmed his commitment to bringing down India’s logistics cost to below 10%. Currently, it stands at around 14–16%. Lower logistics costs are expected to enhance India's global competitiveness. He also aims to achieve the construction of 60 kilometers of road daily.
Vehicle Scrapping Policy to Benefit Consumers
The Union Minister noted that the implementation of the vehicle scrapping policy could lower the cost of auto components by up to 30%. This is expected to result in more affordable vehicles for consumers.
Declining Battery Prices and Local Production Boost
Gadkari highlighted a decline in lithium-ion battery prices in India. Major companies like the Adani Group and Tata are initiating mass production, further reducing costs.
He also mentioned that India has discovered substantial lithium reserves in Jammu and Kashmir, comprising 6% of global reserves. This discovery could support the production of millions of lithium-ion batteries.
India Becomes the Third Largest Auto Market
India’s automobile sector has seen strong growth, now ranking third globally, surpassing Japan. Gadkari praised the industry for its progress and role in driving economic development.
