The Defence Minister Rajnath Singh remarked that India’s defence exports have seen a ‘remarkable jump’ from 600 crores in 2014 to over 24,000 crores in the present. Singh, while speaking to industry stakeholders, noted the Government’s intent towards fostering a self-sustained and self sufficient paradigm of developing indigenously made defense products.

Self-Reliance in Defence Manufacturing

India is now taking steps to bolster the manufacturing of defense products. One of the noticeable action is the prohibition on the import of some defense goods which now must be produced in the country.

Current value of Defence production: 1.6 lakh crores
Target for 2030: 3 lakh crores
Single purpose of these steps is to increase the burden on Indian industries and provide them more control over production work and less dependence on other countries.

Defence Manufacturing Potential of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

Singh called for industry leaders in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to come forward with plans to support further development of the region and asked them to treat it as a defense manufacturing center and think beyond just plants and factories.

“You have a mature industrial ecosystem here. Come to me with concrete proposals,” said Singh with the simple belief that the existing industries around the region have the capacity to augment the ability of India to produce more weapon systems.
