The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed a noticeable increase in incidents involving defacement of Hindu temples with anti-India graffiti in the United States. The revelation was made by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh during a session in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Recent Rise in Hate Incidents Against Hindu Temples
Responding to a written question regarding the safety of Hindu religious sites in the U.S., Minister Singh stated:
“In recent months, there has been a rise in the number of instances of Hindu temples being defaced with anti-India graffiti in the United States of America.”
He emphasized that the Indian government places highest priority on the safety and welfare of Indian citizens and communities living abroad.
Government Actions and Diplomatic Intervention
The minister outlined steps being taken in response to these disturbing events:
Incidents are immediately raised through diplomatic channels with the U.S. government.
Indian missions actively engage with U.S. authorities to ensure proper investigations.
Calls have been made for stringent action against perpetrators and enhanced security at religious sites.
Community and Legal Response
According to Singh:
Affected temples and community associations have lodged formal complaints with local law enforcement agencies.
These agencies are treating the vandalism incidents as hate crimes.
Members of the U.S. Congress have also spoken out, urging security agencies to develop strategies to combat anti-Hindu hate crimes.
