India has reported eight outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of bird flu, affecting farms and backyard poultry in Andhra Pradesh, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH).

The Paris-based organisation cited Indian authorities in its official report released on March 29.

Over 600,000 Poultry Affected

As per the report, the outbreaks led to the death or culling of approximately 602,000 birds. All affected cases were concentrated in Andhra Pradesh’s eastern region.

Bird flu, or avian influenza, is a contagious viral disease that primarily affects birds, with the H5N1 variant known for its high mortality rate in poultry and occasional transmission risk to humans.

Ongoing Monitoring and Containment Measures

Authorities are continuing monitoring and containment efforts in the affected areas to curb further spread of the virus. Culling operations, disinfection protocols, and movement restrictions have been implemented as part of standard response measures.
