Global markets experienced high volatility in early April 2025 following US President Donald Trump’s announcement—and later suspension—of a 26% reciprocal tariff on Indian imports. The policy shift sent ripples across major stock indices, including India’s.

Indian Stock Market Performance

India’s Sensex and Nifty showed sharp movements in response to the tariff developments. After Trump’s April 2 announcement:

April 4: Sensex plunged over 2,000 points, while Nifty fell by over 3%.

April 11: Markets rebounded after a 90-day suspension of the tariffs.

Sensex surged over 1,300 points to reach around 75,158.

Nifty climbed nearly 2% to 22,821.

However, both indices remain below their pre-announcement levels, with Sensex previously at 76,617.

Sensex: -3.49%

Nifty: -3.5%

S&P 500 and Dow Jones declined approximately 6% each in April so far.
