With their diets avoiding meat and fish, lots of people proudly call themselves vegetarians. But, unbeknownst to us, we use household products made from animal parts. So, without any further ado, let’s look at some startling everyday items that are not fully vegetarian.

1. Gelatin

Commonly Found In: Treats that are more fun to eat like marshmallows as well as jelly, and sweet medicine.

Source: Made from the bones, skin, and tissues of animals, especially cows and pigs.

It can be deceptively simple to forget that many gelatin sweets feature the ingredient’s base, which is, of course derived from animals.

2. Sugar

Sweets even those considered vegetarian have sugar which more often than not undergoes refining through multiple processes. Commercial white sugar is often filtered using bone char, a substance made from animal bones.

Bone Char sugar is known for making the sugar whiter and more refined, unlike the bone charused in this process.

3. Cosmetics And Skin Care Products

Lipsticks, creams, lotions, and even shampoos and perfumes tend to use things like lanolin, squalene, and carmine albeit for different purposes.

Some may sound unfamiliar but there are substances that come from animals namely sheep wool and even insects.

These products while friendly in appearance may not always be plant based.

4. Chewing Gum

The look of minty freshness is not the only thing a bunch of chewing gum seek to achieve. Some chewing gums use gelatin, glycerin, and lanolin.

In particular, Lanolin for hand cream is an emollient derived from sheep skin trusted for its softening properties. Shearing sheep is a highly sustainable process.

What You Should Do: Check every ingredient and before you buy the product check labels in detail.

Be wary of containing ingredients such as gelatin, carmine, stearic acid, lanolin, or bone char, as these imply the product is not entirely vegetarian.
