Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk and investor Antonio Gracias have expressed concern over what they described as a sharp rise in the number of Social Security Numbers (SSNs) being issued to non-citizens. During a recent presentation, the pair shared data that showed the number of SSNs issued to non-citizens rose from 270,000 in 2021 to 2.1 million in 2024.
Musk introduced Gracias at the event and pointed to inconsistencies in the Social Security database. He claimed that records still list 20 million deceased individuals as alive. “This is so crazy,” Musk commented, labeling the discovery as deeply troubling.
SSN Process Criticized for Lacking Verification
Gracias, who has been involved in reviewing the Social Security system, criticized how the current process grants SSNs to undocumented immigrants. He explained that once individuals apply for work permits, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues SSNs without interviews or ID verification.
“This isn’t political,” Gracias emphasized. “My family are immigrants. I support legal immigration. This is about maintaining the country’s integrity.”
Allegations of Political Motive and Voter Fraud
Musk criticized the Biden administration, suggesting that the increase in SSNs was part of a broader strategy. “This wasn’t just incompetence. It was a large-scale effort to bring in undocumented immigrants and change the electoral landscape,” Musk claimed.
Gracias added that their team identified non-citizens who had registered to vote, with some already participating in elections. He stated that several of these cases had been submitted for prosecution.
Impact on Political and Policy Debates
The information presented by Musk and Gracias is expected to fuel debates on U.S. immigration policies and the administration of Social Security. While some view the rise in SSNs as evidence of system abuse, others warn against drawing sweeping conclusions from the data.
