Delhi’s Power Minister Ashish Sood on Monday hinted at a possible increase in electricity prices, citing a ₹27,000 crore debt left behind by the previous AAP government through the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC).
Responding to a question raised by AAP MLA Imran Hussain during the ongoing budget session of the Delhi Assembly, Sood said that power distribution companies (discoms) have the legal right to raise tariffs in order to recover these dues.
Discoms Could Increase Rates to Recover Dues
Sood explained,
“The previous government has left a debt of ₹27,000 crores of regulatory assets with the discoms through DERC. To recover this, the companies are authorised to increase electricity rates.”
He further claimed that the Delhi High Court had directed DERC to issue tariff orders during the AAP government’s tenure. However, he alleged that the then-administration failed to safeguard public interest.
Government Monitoring Situation Amid Political Undercurrents
The minister stated that some individuals may politically benefit from rising electricity prices but added,
“The government is in constant communication with DERC and is closely monitoring the situation.”
Budget Session Begins Under New BJP Government
The electricity discussion comes as the newly elected BJP government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, began its first budget session in Delhi. As a ceremonial gesture, Gupta prepared ‘kheer’ to mark the beginning of the session.
The session is scheduled from March 24 to 28, with a possible extension. This marks a major political milestone, as the BJP returns to power in Delhi after 27 years.
