India and parts of northern Afghanistan were rocked by an earthquake, having a recorded magnitude of 5.8, that struck at 12:17 P.M. Eastern Indian Standard Time (IST), on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border. The tremors sent residents from Jammu & Kashmir all the way down to the National Capital Region (NCR) into a state of panic. This was later corroborated by the National Center for Seismology, which confirmed the earthquake’s severity.

Indian Continent reports:

Residents in Srinagar and Delhi confirmed feeling tremors, with several describing the sensation as similar to a chair shaking.

A Srinagar local was quoted as saying, “I felt the tremor. I was in the office when my chair shook.”

At the same time, there has been no causalities or damages recorded. Structural integrity of all buildings commenced assessment and scrutiny. All relevant authorities remain ever vigilant.

The center of the earthquake was estimated to be at the borderline connecting Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Having a depth of approximately 94 kilometers meant surface level ruins were completely avoided.

Pakistan’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre reported a separate set of seismic activities having occurred around the exact same time. 11:47 A.M. local Pakistani time, the sensors recorded a magnitude 5.9 tremor.

Tremors were experienced in cities such as Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Peshawar, including several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa like:

Lower Dir

Bajaur

Malakand

Nowshera

Dir Bala

Shabqadar

Mohmand

The widespread trembles created chaos in people, however, no serious damage to life or property has been reported.

This is the second significant quake in this area in less than a week.  

There was also a quake of 5.5 magnitude in the other parts of Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab region the previous Saturday.
