During the inaugural session of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Ahmedabad, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused the BJP and RSS of attempting to create communal rifts across the country. He claimed this strategy is used to divert attention from pressing national concerns.
Kharge asserted that the RSS-BJP alliance is engaged in a calculated campaign to appropriate and distort the legacies of India’s national icons, especially those affiliated with the Congress.
Recalling Congress Legacy and Gujarat’s Contribution
Marking the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s 1924 Congress presidency, Kharge recalled the historic session held in Belagavi, Karnataka, and noted how the Congress celebrated this legacy in December 2024.
He also highlighted the contributions of three prominent leaders from Gujarat—Dadabhai Naoroji, Mahatma Gandhi, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel—all of whom served as Congress presidents and left a global imprint on the party's values.
Kharge emphasized how Gandhi gave the world the powerful principles of truth and non-violence, which continue to serve as timeless ideals.
Criticism of RSS and Modi Government
Kharge denounced the irony of the RSS claiming Patel’s legacy, noting that Patel himself had banned the RSS due to ideological differences. He also reminded the CWC that the Congress had played a vital role in ensuring Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s inclusion in the Constituent Assembly, a fact Ambedkar himself acknowledged in 1949.
The Congress president further criticized the RSS for opposing the Constitution when it was adopted and accused the Modi government of marginalizing the statues of Gandhi, Nehru, and Ambedkar within Parliament, calling it an insult to these great figures.
DK Shivakumar and Party Revamp Plans
Earlier in the day, Congress leader and Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar described the ongoing CWC and All India Congress Committee (AICC) session as a "turning point" for the party.
He stated that Congress plans a major organizational revamp, with increased responsibility for district and block-level leaders to strengthen grassroots engagement.
Priyanka Gandhi’s Future Role Under Deliberation
Reports indicate that the party leadership is actively discussing a more defined and possibly elevated role for Priyanka Gandhi. These internal deliberations are part of the broader strategic planning happening during the two-day event.
The event also carries historical significance, as it is the first major Congress convention in Gujarat since 1961, previously held in Bhavnagar, marking a symbolic return to the state post-independence.
