Suspense crime, Digital Desk : In Cologne, Germany, the largest evacuation since World War II took place as three unexploded U.S bombs were defused on Wednesday. The evacuation enabled the bomb disposal experts to successfully defuse the bombs within the hour. More than twenty thousand residents were evacuated after the bombs were discovered during prep work for a construction project on Monday.
Rare Discovery Near Cologne’s Historic Centre
The bombs were located right outside Cologne’s historic centre. The area is rarely affected by such evasions, which surprises me. Even after 80 years since WWII, unexploded ordnance is found throughout Germany.
Key Areas Affected in the Evacuation
The evacuation also included a variety of:
Residential Buildings
58 hotels
9 Schools
1 Hospital and 2 nursing homes
Multiple museums and office buildings
Messe/Deutz train station
Bridges over the Rhine which include the heavily used Hohenzollern railway bridge were also closed. Shipping traffic on the Rhine was halted temporarily for safety reasons.
Brief Delay Due to One Resident’s Refusal to Leave
Officials indicated there was a slight postponement in the defusal of a bomb because one of the residents refused to leave their house in the historic area. Once this issue was cleared up, the operation proceeded without any further problems.
